Updated 3/3/2013 – the building has been demolished.

This summer, Miami Today moved out of their headquarters, situated on prime Brickell Avenue land.

The property is directly adjacent to the Brickell CityCentre project.

Musibay is reporting that Nothern Trust plans to sell its building at 700 Brickell and move next to door to 600 Brickell.

Swire already owns a portion of the block – this could be a good way for them to get frontage on brickell avenue.

    So sad.

How old was this building? All of this seemed to happen very quickly and without much notice…I wonder if this was done on purpose to get past any potential preservationist concerns?

Good riddance and hopefully the rest of the buildings on that block go down as well, to make way for city centre brickell avenue frontage

It was built in 1964 (the Miami Herald building was built in 1963) and formerly housed a radio station.

They applied for a demolition permit last fall.

Not a big loss. Not as old as I was guessing, just built in colonial style.

On whether Swire is interested in acquiring the property for Brickell CityCentre:

Mr. [Stephen] Owens also did not rule out Swire’s interest in potentially acquiring property along Brickell Avenue between Southeast Seventh and Eighth streets, a site now home to Northern Trust Bank and an affiliated brick building formerly occupied by Miami Today.

However, Mr. Owens indicated there are no active discussions about that property. If Swire were to make a bid for the land, he said, there probably would be other parties interested in buying it.

“That property has been speculated about for the last three or four years,” he added. “To the extent that it ever is made available… that remains to be seen.”.

As published in Miami Today a few weeks ago.

Okay so miami today building and northern trust building are no more, but what about that other building “Eastern national bank” that’s closest to the metromover. Does northern trust own that too? Would love to see a blank slate for the whole block, so swire could get it all

Saw a little bit of the walls still standing last Monday 3/11 . Was surprised to see it going down but not really a bad thing not like the building was from the 20s or 30s or anything like that.

Two dozen parties have submitted offers for the 700-710 Brickell property, with many of the offers from offshore or new-to-market bidders.

700 Brickell is owned by descendants of the Brickell pioneer family, while Northern Trust owns 710 Brickell Ave.

The owners hope to have the property under contract within three weeks.
