UM Archaeologist Sues To Stop Met Square Construction

University of Miami archaeologist William J. Pestle filed a lawsuit last month against the city of Miami over a deal with Met Square developer MDM group, reports the New York Times.

Pestle’s lawsuit will likely delay construction at Met Square. Pestle wants a compromise agreement between MDM and the city to be declared invalid.

Commissioner Marc Sarnoff told the paper that he disagreed with Pestle’s lawsuit and that the compromise will create a ‘truly authentic building.’

    Nobody cares what’s under the ground there. And these guys have likely killed the theater lease that was in place. So rather than having new, much needed retail for the area, there’s going to be some display that takes up a lot of space and no one will come to see. Fantastic.

    people like this prevent progress in our community , i felt the compromise was a good one at list people would get to see the circle and enjoy other exhibits as well as the amenities the entertainment complex has to offer. we the tax payers paid millions of the property where the first circle was found and no one has seen it. where are all those supporters in clouding many indian tribes with their casino fortunes to raise money to exhibit that circle! so now the city reaches a compromise and this guy is not happy with it , is he going to buy the land and develop an exhibit out of his own pocket. i don’t think so well then lets go with a compromise and every one can enjoy history and the rest of the complex.

      Why this guy is not doing something regarding the Tequesta Circle that cost millions to taxpayers and now is buried under soil and dog pup!

    This is not some old Roman or Greek building, this is not some Church from the 1500s. It is rocks and MAYBE something from Native Americans from thousands of years ago, but we have no clue what they did there. Of course people lived in Miami thousands of years ago. But it is not like they have any historical meaning at all. The compromise is fine. Besides for the few archaeologist no one really cares.

    I love that all these people that want “progress” and a more effective downtown core are not probably not even residents of downtown, every other city protects its history whether is a piece of a wall, a building, undergound mysteries, look it up. Go to Paris, New York, even St. Augustine which isnt far.

    There is just no need for that complex there, all that complex could have gone on Flagler street to turn it back to what it was. But now we need a movie theater here, also in brickell center and probably world center. Its an theater people get over it and preserve some history.

      What history, some holes in the ground? The old Tequesta village was where pretty much all of Downtown and Brickell currently are so no more construction to preserve some holes? It’s not like they uncovered a freakin Mayan pyramid!!!

    well since no one cares im just going to put some condos on top of the Miami City cemetary its just holes in the ground, and ill give you the fact that its too late to save whatever is under already existing structures but thats why we have a preservation board now to not destroy our history.

      If it were not for the development of this complex these discoveries would not have been found. And since a COMPROMISE from all sides hasbeen struck. Of which everyone, except for the UM gentlemen were extremely happy with. The courts look for parties to come up with a compromise, prior to litigating. Being there is one in place, I suspect it will hold up. As it should.

      You’re the same one who keeps commenting on every post saying every condo should have parking. You clearly just don’t comprehend how urban cities operate. Second, a compromised was made to allow both the holes in the ground and complex to be build. Seriously stop trolling.

        I completely understand how an urban downtown would work, but unlike real urban cities like New York you dont have 75% of the people that live in downtown leave it everyday for work, the employment in this city is not in downtown, its in suburban areas, Now if you told me a headquarter office building is being built for one of the top empolyers in Miami like Baptist, the 3 major cruise lines etc..then condos without parking make sense.

    for the gentleman who suggest that he lives in downtown and this site should totally be preserved i too live in downtown and i think this is a great compromise. that both parties agreed upon. he is right we need to encourage development deep in the central business district which when it starts we will find remnants of fort dallas as well as other indian settlement which may be buried. this compromise signal to developers that that agreements can be reached and history and progress can coexist as long as we are all willing to have an open mind and be willing to compromise on these issues
